The color

What Emerald is, and why it works or fails.

Emerald is a saturated green leaning toward blue, clean all the way through, which gives it its gemstone look.

Its depth, how light or dark a color is, sits in the middle: darker than mint, lighter than forest green. Its clarity, the cleanness of the pigment, is high. On satin and silk it shines and reads formal; in a cotton knit it calms down and keeps its strength. In photographs it shows up as a solid block of color.

Emerald works on colorings that can match its clarity. A clear color next to a face shows up the face's own clarity: on bright eyes and strong contrast between hair and skin, emerald repeats that sharpness and the face looks crisp. On a soft, grayed coloring the same green is louder than the face, and the skin looks dull beside it. Undertone, the warm or cool cast of the skin, does the rest. The blue lean suits cool skin, which is why the Winters and True Summer wear it, and turns the golden skin of the Autumns and the softer Springs sallow. Bright Spring is warm, but so clear and high in contrast that clarity outweighs the cool lean.

How to wear it

Where each season puts Emerald.

The verdict the analysis gives Emerald for each season, where it goes, and the reason.

Anywhere, the face included5
  • Bright SpringBright Spring is warm, yet its clarity and high contrast outweigh the cool lean, so emerald at the collar looks sharp and lively on it.
  • True SummerTrue Summer is fully cool with enough color in the face to stand up to emerald, which works on it as a blouse, a knit or a dress.
  • Dark WinterEmerald set against Dark Winter's depth and cool contrast looks rich, since the darkness of the coloring keeps the green from shouting; wear it as a coat or a dress.
  • True WinterEmerald's clean, cool pigment repeats True Winter's own clarity, and it works next to the face as a shirt, a knit or a tie.
  • Bright WinterEmerald has the punch a Bright Winter's high-contrast coloring calls for, and an emerald top under a black coat makes the face look sharp.
As an accent or below the waist1
  • Light SummerAs an accentEmerald shares Light Summer's cool undertone and is far stronger than its light, soft coloring, so it works as an accent: a scarf, a bag or a belt.
Not worn6
  • Light SpringLight Spring's warm, light coloring meets a cool green of real intensity, and the face goes pale beside it; coral or soft navy brings color back to the cheeks.
  • True SpringEmerald's blue lean works against True Spring's fully warm skin, which turns sallow next to it; terracotta or camel gives a warm color of similar weight.
  • Soft SummerSoft Summer's grayed, gentle coloring looks dull beside emerald's clean intensity; sage gives a green at the same quiet level as the face.
  • Soft AutumnSoft Autumn is warm and muted, the opposite of emerald on both counts, so the green looks harsh and the skin yellow; olive is the green to choose.
  • True AutumnThe cool blue in emerald drains True Autumn's golden warmth at the face; for a green, olive keeps the warmth, and rust or mustard brings color back.
  • Dark AutumnEmerald's blue lean cools Dark Autumn's warm skin to a gray cast, though the contrast could carry its strength; rust or dark olive keeps the strength and the warmth.

Emerald

Emerald: common questions

Emerald is cool. It is a green pushed toward blue, clear and saturated. That blue lean suits pink and blue-toned skin and makes golden skin look sallow, which is why the Autumns skip it. Bright Spring is the one warm season that wears it at the face, because its clarity counts for more than its undertone.

Pure white, black and charcoal are the cleanest partners. Among colors, royal blue, deep purple and raspberry share its clarity, and sharp red or fuchsia in a small dose makes a strong contrast. Muted earth tones such as camel or rust look dull next to it, so they belong in a different outfit.

Soft Summer skips it. The coloring is cool, which suits emerald's undertone, but it is grayed and gentle, and a clean, saturated green outshines it: the eye goes to the shirt and the face looks dull. Sage and soft navy give Soft Summer color at its own quiet level.

On the same terms as anyone: it comes down to coloring. For a man who is a Winter, a True Summer or a Bright Spring, an emerald knit, overshirt or tie works at the face. A Light Summer wears it as a small accent, such as a pocket square or socks. AI reads your photos and answers, fixed rules make the call.
