The color

What Soft navy is, and why it works or fails.

Soft navy is navy with gray worked into it, the color of a navy sweater after many washes.

On the depth scale, which runs from light to dark, it sits in the middle, a few steps lighter than classic navy. Its undertone, the warm or cool cast under a color, is neutral, balanced between golden and icy blue. Its clarity, how clear or muted a color looks, is low, so on wool or cotton it reads calm and slightly dusty, with soft edges.

Soft navy is a dark without a hard edge. Its medium depth sits close to the depth of the Summers and the light Springs, so the face stays in front of the garment. Its neutral undertone lets warm and cool skin both sit beside it at ease. Clarity decides the rest. The muted Summers match its gray directly. Light Spring and Bright Spring, light and warm, use it as the calm dark next to light skin, where black would be too heavy. The Winters and True Spring need saturation at the face, and on them the gray in soft navy reads as dust. For the Autumns, the blue base sits apart from warm skin, so it works as a scarf, a strap or a shoe.

How to wear it

Where each season puts Soft navy.

The verdict the analysis gives Soft navy for each season, where it goes, and the reason.

Anywhere, the face included5
  • Light SpringSoft navy gives a Light Spring a dark at a depth its light, warm coloring can hold, so a soft navy shirt or trench sits easily at the face.
  • Bright SpringBright Spring's high contrast wants a dark next to light skin, and soft navy supplies one whose neutral undertone keeps warm skin bright, in a blazer or knit.
  • Light SummerFor a Light Summer, soft navy frames the face and stays calm beside cool, low-contrast skin, which makes a soft navy cardigan or linen shirt an easy daily piece.
  • True SummerSoft navy repeats a True Summer's cool, softly muted coloring at medium depth, so a soft navy suit or dress with a soft white collar suits the face at work.
  • Soft SummerThe gray in soft navy is the gray in a Soft Summer's own coloring, so it photographs as part of the face and serves as this season's everyday dark.
As an accent or below the waist3
  • Soft AutumnAs an accentSoft Autumn shares the muted clarity, but the blue reads cool on warm skin, so soft navy works as an accent, a scarf or bag strap beside camel.
  • True AutumnAs an accentNavy's blue base sits apart from a True Autumn's rich warmth, so it shows up as an accent, a suede loafer or a stripe in a knit, beside espresso.
  • Dark AutumnAs an accentSoft navy is lighter and grayer than a Dark Autumn's saturated coloring, so it belongs in an accent like a woven belt, and midnight blue becomes the navy for coats.
Not worn4
  • True SpringA True Spring is fully warm and clear, and the gray in soft navy dulls that clarity at the face; chocolate or turquoise anchors an outfit with more life.
  • Dark WinterDark Winter needs saturated depth at the face and soft navy reads faded beside it; midnight blue gives the same blue with the clarity this coloring holds.
  • True WinterOn a True Winter's fully cool, clear coloring the dusty finish of soft navy looks like a garment washed too often, and royal blue or midnight blue fits instead.
  • Bright WinterBright Winter's vivid contrast makes soft navy look dull and gray at the collar, so this season reaches for midnight blue, or royal blue when it wants color.

Soft navy

Soft navy: common questions

For many people, yes. Soft navy does the job of black in a coat, suit or trousers, at a medium depth and with gray in it. Light Spring, Bright Spring and the three Summers wear it at the face, where black would be too heavy for their coloring. The three Winters keep black, since soft navy looks faded on their clear, high-contrast coloring.

Classic navy is cool. Soft navy, the grayed version, sits closer to neutral: the gray takes the edge off the blue, so it works beside warm and cool skin. That neutral undertone is why Light Spring and Bright Spring, two warm seasons, can wear soft navy at the face while the cool Summers wear it too.

Soft white, light gray, dusty pink, dusty blue, lavender and light forget-me-not, the colors worn by the same seasons. Soft navy with soft white is the cleanest pairing, soft navy with dusty pink the gentlest. Camel works too for Light Spring and Bright Spring, the two seasons that wear both camel and soft navy at the face.

A Winter does better in midnight blue. Dark Winter, True Winter and Bright Winter have clear, saturated coloring, and the gray in soft navy makes the face look dull beside it. Midnight blue fills the same role in a coat or suit, with the depth and clarity a Winter needs. Royal blue is the brighter option for a shirt or a knit.
