One of the 50 colors the analysis judges

Pure white, season by season.

Pure white is the brightest, coolest white, the optic white of a new cotton shirt. Dark Winter, True Winter and Bright Winter wear it at the face; the other nine seasons wear it below the waist or as an accent.

The color

What Pure white is, and why it works or fails.

Pure white sits at the light end of the depth scale, depth meaning how light or dark a color is: white at full strength, with nothing to warm or gray it.

Many white fabrics are treated with optical brighteners, which is why a new shirt can look faintly blue in strong daylight. Its undertone, the warm or cool cast under a color, is cool. Its clarity, how clear or muted a color looks, is as high as it goes. On cloth it reads crisp and slightly cold.

Pure white works where the face already has contrast and a cool undertone. On the three Winters, white next to dark hair or brows repeats the light against dark the coloring is built on, and the skin looks clean beside it. On a warm undertone, the blue cast in optic white makes the skin look yellow by comparison. On a muted or low-contrast coloring, white is the brightest thing near the face and it pulls the eye to the collar. Ivory and soft white keep the light depth and take the edge off, which is why they replace it at the face. Six seasons wear pure white below the waist, in jeans or trousers; Light Spring, Bright Spring and Light Summer wear it as an accent, a sneaker or a belt.

How to wear it

Where each season puts Pure white.

The verdict the analysis gives Pure white for each season, where it goes, and the reason.

Anywhere, the face included3
  • Dark WinterPure white is the lightest point a Dark Winter's contrast can reach, so a white shirt under a black or midnight blue suit lifts the whole face.
  • True WinterA True Winter's cool, clear coloring wears white at full strength, and a crisp poplin shirt or a white winter coat sits right at the face.
  • Bright WinterBright Winter's vivid coloring holds white's glare, and white next to fuchsia or emerald gives the face the sharp contrast this season looks best in.
As an accent or below the waist9
  • Light SpringAs an accentPure white's cold glare outshines a Light Spring's soft, warm coloring, so it works as an accent, a white sneaker or canvas belt, and ivory takes the shirt.
  • True SpringBelow the waistBeside optic white, a True Spring's golden warmth reads yellow at the jaw, so white works below the waist in chinos or a linen skirt, with ivory at the neckline.
  • Bright SpringAs an accentBright Spring is clear enough for white's brightness, but the blue cast clashes with its warm undertone, so white appears as an accent, a sneaker or watch strap.
  • Light SummerAs an accentLight Summer shares white's coolness, yet its muted, low-contrast face looks washed out under a bright collar, so white works as an accent in a sandal or belt.
  • True SummerBelow the waistOptic white is crisper than a True Summer's softly muted coloring can carry at the face, so white jeans work below the waist, with soft white or light gray above.
  • Soft SummerBelow the waistA white collar bounces glare onto a Soft Summer's grayed, cool face, so white works below the waist in trousers or a skirt, under a warm greige top.
  • Soft AutumnBelow the waistOptic white sits cold and stark against a Soft Autumn's muted warmth, so it belongs below the waist in linen trousers, with latte or ivory up top.
  • True AutumnBelow the waistNext to a True Autumn's rich, warm coloring pure white looks like a hole in the outfit, so it goes below the waist as white denim, under a camel knit.
  • Dark AutumnBelow the waistWhite's cold cast reads chalky against a Dark Autumn's warm, dark coloring, so white denim works below the waist, and ivory under an espresso jacket handles the collar.

Pure white

Pure white: common questions

Optic white, or pure white, is cool and clear, and it suits the three Winters at the face. Ivory has a yellow base and suits warm colorings: Light Spring, True Spring and the three Autumns. The Summers, whose coloring is cool and muted, do best in soft white, which sits between the two. Bright Spring wears soft white as well.

The three Winters: Dark Winter, True Winter and Bright Winter. Their coloring is cool and has strong contrast between skin and hair or eyes, and pure white repeats both. Everyone else can still wear it away from the face: white jeans, trousers or a skirt for six seasons, a sneaker or a belt for Light Spring, Bright Spring and Light Summer.

Usually because the white is cooler or brighter than your coloring. Pure white reflects a lot of light onto the face, and on warm or muted skin that glare makes the skin look sallow and the shadows look deeper. A softer white, ivory for warm colorings or soft white for cool, muted ones, gives the same clean look with less glare.

Below the waist, yes: white jeans or linen trousers work. At the face, pure white is too cold and too bright for a warm, muted coloring. Ivory or latte gives a Soft Autumn the light tone it needs at the collar, and warm greige works for a knit or a coat in the same soft register.
